The Department of Pulmonological Medicine is located on the fourth floor of the S.Scolastica Cassino Hospital (yellow path); it has 34 beds – two beds dedicated to the hospitalization of prisoners.
The complex Operating Unit is responsible for the hospitalization of patients suffering from acute diseases of internistic competence (Pulmonology, gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology, replacement diseases, angiology, etc.) through a global, interdisciplinary and multiprofessional care approach.
The most frequent diseases treated are cardiovascular (heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation), respiratory (COPD, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, acute respiratory failure, diagnosis of lung cancer), infectious (sepsis and soft tissue infections), gastroenterological (colitis,diarrhoea,melena), oncological, neurological (brain stroke), diabetes (ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar coma, severe hypoglycaemia).
Services/Activities provided
The Operating Unit of Medicine provides internal visits with a dedicated divisional outpatient clinic from Monday to Friday from 12.00 to 14.00:
- post-discharge check
- specialist visit to internal medicine
Clinical Nutrition outpatient visits from Monday to Friday from 08.30 to 13.30:
- Therapeutic PACs with drug administration
The Internal Medicine UOC includes a Simple Operational Unit of Diabetology that takes care of people who have alterations in blood glucose values or other metabolic alterations; it carries out diabetological visits for outsiders on Wednesday afternoons from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm.
A section of Pneumology is attached to the Pneumological Guideline Medicine UOC, pending the opening of the Pneumology UOC, which provides services:
- Respiratory Pathophysiology: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 08.30 to 14.00
- Bronchial Endoscopy and Interventional Pulmonology: Elected on Monday and Thursday
- Respiratory Disorders in Sleep: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays after outpatient evaluation

The Pneumological Medicine Unit deals with the management (diagnosis, care and assistance) of patients with internal diseases.
How to access
Patients can access the ward on an inpatient basis in its various modalities: urgent hospitalization through the HCP , ordinary on the proposal of a general practitioner, coming from internal wards of the Hospital or transferred from other Facilities.
Access to outpatient services is regulated through booking c/o RECUP. For urgent and/or particularly complex services, there is no reservation:
- Visits for O2 delivery
- Bronchial Endoscopy Activity
- Urgent Outpatient Services
Hours and days of receipt
- Reception hours for family members: every day at the following times: 13.00-14.00
- Patient access and visit times: every day at the following times: 12.30-14.00 and 18.30-20.00
Prevention
The lines of treatment also include a simultaneous intervention of secondary prevention in all the diseases treated and prevention of patients’ disabilities. Particular attention to pressure lesions and hypomobility syndrome in inpatients.
