World Cancer Day: Prevention the best weapon. New Mammograms for Women’s Health Coming Soon to ASL

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the Strategic Directorate of the Local Health Authority of Frosinone once again raises awareness of the importance of prevention and recommends adherence to the invitation to participate in regional cancer screening programmes, which have always been active in the province.

These are prevention and early diagnosis interventions that aim to reduce mortality and the incidence of oncological diseases in the population that undergoes periodic checks.

Screening campaigns are aimed in particular at a population, apparently healthy, that does not manifest symptoms, identified as at risk, simply because of age. A band sent, through the personalized sending of a letter home, to undergo a free diagnostic examination (level I test). If the examination is “positive”, the in-depth investigations (Level II) and, if necessary, the treatment (Level III) are guaranteed, always free of charge.

To join the program, the toll-free number 800 003 422 is available, active from Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm.

The Asl of Frosinone, despite the period characterized by the pandemic, has always been attentive to the neoplastic pathology, not suspending therapies or controls. The numbers are eloquent: in Sora 5248 therapies were carried out while in Frosinone 6772, with a total increase of 35% compared to 2020. Also new in 2021 was the opening of the Day Hospital for oral therapies at the Cassino hospital.

Good adherence to screening for early detection of breast cancer which has 68.4% but, in the coming days, the Prevention Department will launch a great plan for both the cervix and the colon rectum where we are still too far behind.

“Our focus on improving screening – explains the Director of the UOC Oncology P.O. Sora Dr. Cecilia Nisticò – has led to the creation of the Multidisciplinary Oncology Group composed of representatives who deal with breast, gynecological and colorectal pathology have also included screening, bringing good results in terms of raising awareness of the population, in particular the breast. Our goal now is to involve the territory with General Practitioners and specialists to raise the membership rates even more “.

Clinical engineering expert Eng. Chiara Basile talks about the Women’s Health project and answers some frequently asked questions:

Women’s Health: innovative new technologies throughout the province of Frosinone

Thanks to regional funding, 6 new state-of-the-art mammograms will be installed throughout the province of Frosinone. The path involves the creation of a second level path dedicated to screening at the Spaziani Hospital in Frosinone with two mammograms and two ultrasounds.

But at the heart of the Women’s Health path is the strengthening of the Territorial services where women can go to do their check-ups in a new community health centre, in order to make them protagonists of their well-being and their own health. With the PNRR the new mammograms will arrive and with other regional funds we will proceed with a global modernization of the technological endowment.

Whatis a mammogram?

Mammography is a radiological examination of the breast. Mammographic screening is still the only method considered effective for the early detection of breast cancers in women over the age of 50. However, the examination does not prevent the development of breast cancer. However, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the chances of survival and the less invasive the therapy.

What are the benefits?

  • Mammography is able to detect tumors of significantly less than one centimeter in diameter, imperceptible to palpation. This generally increases the chances of successful therapies.
  • If breast cancer is diagnosed early, in most cases the breast can be preserved and the therapy is less invasive.
  • Mammographic screening is subject to quality controls and is able to reduce mortality from breast cancers.
  • Continuous monitoring of the technologies adopted and specialised skills ensures a high level of quality.

Despite the fact that in recent years the percentage of new breast cancers has increased by some points, thanks to continuous investments in the medical field and in research, including diagnostic machinery, there is the possibility of identifying the disease at an early stage (particularly for that segment of the population considered at risk) and, consequently, having an improved therapeutic outlook, since a small tumor has a greater chance of being treated.

There have been many investments in our ASL thanks to the continuous support of the Lazio Region. Through this constant activity, we can give reliable and advanced answers to all patients, putting them at the centre of a new healthcare system that takes care of them closer and closer.
