1200 surgeries performed on average every year, 3050 consultations and consultations. These are the numbers of the clinical, diagnostic and surgical activity of the Ophthalmology UOSD of Santa Scolastica di Cassino directed by Dr. Luigi Pinchera.
A department that has the shortest waiting lists in the Lazio Region and among the fastest in Italy. To perform surgery, in fact, the times range between 30 and 45 days.
“This is a record and our pride – explains Dr. Pinchera – and this makes Santa Scolastica a reference point for active mobility from other regions. In fact, we have patients arriving from Molise, Abruzzo, Campania (Upper Caserta) and from all over the Lazio Region. For urgent pathologies there is practically no expectation. In general, the active mobility index corresponds to about 40% of the cases treated”.
Pinchera Director, what innovation does the Ophthalmic UOSD present?
There are several but, in particular, I want to emphasize the surgical procedure of extracting the cataract also for refractive purposes. That is, we can simultaneously correct pre-existing vision defects such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism. The interventions for the resolution of retinal detachments are then given maximum urgency.
Among other surgeries, posterior vitrectomies are performed for complex cases such as post-operative hemovitreal macular pucker cataracts in diabetic retinopathy, treatments of macular diseases with intravitreal injections of AntiVEGF.
We operate every weekday of the week and emergencies even on holidays, we offer eye consultations requested by the Emergency Department and other departments, instrumental diagnostics (fluorangiography, auto fluorescence, retinography) and retinal laser treatments.
Because of the clinical risk?
Maximum attention! Our management includes a careful control of all procedures of access and inclusion in surgical sessions, of patients. Those who are at risk for previous illnesses are first subjected to careful specialist advice.
Any news for the near future?
Yes, our ophthalmic operating room is about to be equipped with innovative, state-of-the-art machinery, which will allow us, for example, in the specific case of cataract extraction operations, a “saving” in the delivery of ultrasound power and, consequently, the possibility of further reducing the risk of possible iatrogenic damage, that is, those years induced by the surgical procedure itself.
Ophthalmology is an excellence of the Asl of Frosinone and soon the activity of the other territorial departments will also be reported.
