The Strategic Management of the ASL has initiated a series of actions to stem the overcrowding and difficulties of the Emergency Room of the Spaziani di Frosinone. Initiatives that concern, first and foremost, the organisational aspect of the structure that is changing its face these days.
“Beyond the absence of medical staff – explains the General Director Dr. Angelo Aliquò – it is clear that there is also an organizational problem and, after several attempts that have been made, without positive results, we still register the presence of too many people who are stationed in inadequate conditions in the corridors of the P.S.
I asked the Health, Care and Emergency Department to make some structural moves because we need answers immediately. These changes must certainly be accompanied by the strengthening of the workforce, which we are working on, starting with a greater presence of nursing figures and the creation of a more complete triage.
In the meantime, however, as mentioned, the changes in the organization of the P.S. can help us”.
With the Health Director Dr. Luca Casertano we go into detail.
What interventions are being carried out?
The Emergency Department of Frosinone is designed and built as an inpatient ward and for this reason it has serious deficiencies.
The typical configuration of a modern P.S. has an open space capable of accommodating more patients, while respecting privacy (divided by curtains). The Spaziani is instead divided into many small rooms that do not allow a comfortable and peaceful stay for the assisted and do not allow to optimize the staff for surveillance.
What short-term actions are being implemented?
Work is underway to move the waiting area for relatives to the prefabricated buildings located outside: in these places, a 12-hour information desk will be opened every day, throughout the week, where they can stay comfortably and have information about the path and health status of their relatives.
At the same time, what is now the former visitors’ room, located inside the P.S., has been renovated, equipped with a medical gas system, surveillance and used as a care area.
This allows us to empty the corridor and assist patients in a comfortable environment, equipped with toilets, better observed by nursing staff and supported with everything that technology requires.
This first part of short-term interventions is also supported by the increase in short-intensive observation beds that has been transferred to the second floor, at the Emergency Medicine, and allows us to stop patients destined for hospitalization in this area.
Two rooms have also been created for particularly fragile people, one for the obstetric and paediatric path, the other for psychiatric patients and prisoners, for taking charge of cases that require special attention and caution.
Still with a view to reducing overcrowding in P.S. we are activating 6 beds of internal medicine for gastroenterology at the premises used by nephrology, on the third floor of the P.O. Spaziani.
For the technological equipment?
Also in this field, the enhancement is underway with an increase in monitors and remote surveillance cameras in the parking area in front of the red and yellow rooms.
