Outpatient clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy

The Neurology department of Frosinone has enriched its healthcare offer with a new Clinic dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of Epilepsy at Spaziani Hospital.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by the occurrence of epileptic seizures, defined as clinical manifestations of paroxysmal occurrence and unpredictable recurrence in most cases, of very short duration, characterized by signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal neuronal activity.

It is one of the most common neurological diseases and affects around 500,000 people in Italy.

Given the complexity of the disease, its multiple facets and the presence of effects on the quality of daily life, a multifunctional approach is therefore necessary that provides for an integration between several professional figures, coordinated by an epilettologist.

The Spaziani Operational Unit is directed by Dr. Roberto De Simone, neurologist-epileptologist, former organizer of the important Epilepsy Center of the “S. Eugenio” Hospital in Rome, who transferred his skills to the hospital.

In a short time, the clinic, active on Thursday mornings, with reservation through RECUP, has already received numerous patients in need of structured answers.

The epilepsy center represents a first nucleus to which an enhanced electroencephalography laboratory will be added, with the acquisition of a dynamic EEG (i.e. able to perform 24-48 hour exams) and an EEG video (able to record both the EEG signal and the patient video, for a study of anatomical-clinical functional correlations.)

The Spaziani Hospital clinic joins two other Centers, dedicated to multiple sclerosis and headaches, which have long been operational in the Neurology UOC, with the achievement of high professional standards.

Thus, in the Asl of Frosinone, a neurology based on a network of Centres of Excellence and a high quality proposal is configured, in the face of increasingly complex diseases and therapies that require a continuous updating of scientific and technological-pharmaceutical knowledge.
